Effective Training With Humor
Say NO to BORING trainers!
A scheduled sexual harassment training should not be the cause for a collective yawn throughout your workplace. Trainings should be engaging and informative. The experts at Bridge Safety Consultants offer comprehensive sexual harassment training that accomplishes both these goals through the use of humor.
Would you rather attend a training session that is dry and repetitive (think lawyers) or one where the trainer engages you with the use of humor? You and your employees are more likely to pay attention and think about the material being discussed when you are being amused. That’s the key to our training at Bridge Safety Consultants. Our trainers are experts at using humor to make the point and illustrate what is and is not likely to be considered sexual harassment. Humor helps people pay attention and hold on to information. Humor also immediately helps to ease any tension that may initially be present in discussing such a complicated and often personal topic. This will encourage people to participate, ask questions, and really engage in the training so that everyone attending the training gets the most from the experience.
The thing that makes sexual harassment so difficult to train on and fight is that there’s a lot of gray area in terms of what constitutes harassment. This not only makes it more difficult for victims to distinguish whether something is sexual harassment or not, but it also makes it challenging for other employees who might witness an iffy situation to know whether it’s worth reporting. In our trainings we will provide specific examples of unacceptable, and acceptable, behaviors as opposed to making general statements. This is important because employers don’t want to suggest that behavior is unlawful when it might not be. Clarity is key.
It’s important that your company offers clear and comprehensive sexual harassment training, not only to protect against sexual harassment claims, but to abide by the law. A new California law (SB1343) requires that every company, even those with as few as 5 employees must provide comprehensive training on sexual harassment, abusive behavior, and sexual orientation before the end of 2019. The law requires employers to provide at least two hours of sexual harassment prevention training and education to all supervisory employees and at least one hour of such training to all non-supervisory employees. Training and education must be provided once every two years thereafter. This repetition can be dull, dry, and thus difficult to pay attention to again and again. Our method of incorporating humor into the training fixes all those issues.
Many studies also show that the use of humor in teaching helps long-term memory and improves retention. This means that what is taught using humor during our sexual harassment training is more likely to be absorbed and remembered by attendees. This is critical as the awareness and clarity provided in our training sessions should be present in the day-to-day interactions with your company’s employees moving forward. Furthermore, the intricacies of all the new laws and regulations can be difficult to keep track of, especially if taught in a dry, dull manor. The lessons and guidelines taught in our sexual harassment training program is meant to guide the actions and behaviors of everyone at your business. This will help protect you, your employees, and your company.
